Let's say we had a missing a pet. What would be worse: Knowing it was dead, or not knowing it was dead?
Or even worse, knowing it was trapped but we don't know where.
Or even worse, knowing it was being tortured in a dungeon.
For all we know, this might have been a "spiritual white lie" by an unknowing Sylvia.
Or the story might not be what it is told to be.
