The STARGATE Discussion Group Archives: An Official Intro (by PJ Gaenir):

The Star Gate list was established in April 1998 by Steve Crietzman, and then adapted in June as an alternative for PJ Gaenir's Viewer List which was planned to cease operation July 4, 1998. It acquired most the membership of the 250+ VWR list and replaced it as the RV field's "leading central" discussion point and continued to grow in size. By Spring of 2002 it had a membership of around 400. At that time (and somewhat prior), other online discussion venues began to come about and grow, and the RV community became much more diffused in communication sources as a result. It's mid-2006 as I type, and projects I have on the internet (like Ten Thousand Roads and The Dojo Psi) now have thousands of regular participants (for the TKR RVwebForum) and registrations (for the Dojo's TKR RV Galleries). While it is common that internet discussion venues cycle in and out of popularity and participation, I am concerned that the StarGate list's history is unknown to many new people in the field, who are missing out on some great references, some in-depth conversations, and introduction to some of the earlier people in the public field.

I am concerned that time may be marginalizing the list, and I wouldn't want this shift to affect the accessibility of the past materials, which are of real value to the field at large. The Viewer archives (from 1997-1998) (and to a far lesser degree, the Psi archives) have some early history of "layman's RV" but StarGate inherited all of that, and continued it and grew it as well, and this history is part of how we got to wherever we are today.

Due to its storage form inside Yahoo, the list at its source is a bit laborious to wade through, and can't be gathered for reading offline at all unfortunately. Every post is surrounded by advertising. Yahoo has storage limits as well, and I worry that someday the oldest materials may disappear, or that some unpredictable change in list ownership---or change in Yahoo Policy---will lose the materials in whole or part. I wanted to make sure it got archived at the Dojo Psi Library so no 'surprise' could wipe out this history.

Yahoo Groups employs software restrictions which prevent its group materials (discussion lists) being archivable outside its system in any sane way (to keep people in their system to see the ads, of course). After two years of trying a variety of options for scripted and semi-manual automation that could acquire these archives, I finally just gave up on that idea. I have had to use a manual-method that while still unwieldy, insanely time-consuming, and slightly imperfect in a few ways, did at least allow the archive to be created at all. This archive follows (in time) my archive of the Viewer and Psi lists, and could be considered in reference to my archive of the DIA CRV Manual (for terminology etc.). This is concurrent with my archive of the brief RV Oasis/PJRV list, and concurrent and prior to my archives of the TKR BBS. This archive is only related in topic and name to the gigantic CIA STAR GATE Program archives also available in the Dojo Psi library.
