From: "PJ Gaenir" Date: Tue Nov 12, 2002 1:10 pm Subject: ListBiz - Yahoo - Be Aware dennanm Offline Offline Send Email Send Email This was posted by Sharon on her private list, and I'm posting it here as it's worth knowing for those who care, since this is a yahoo list -- You may recall not long ago Yahoo essentially sold everybody's info to everybody else and then gave users the 'option' to go 'change their settings' to 'no' for all this.... Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track Yahoo Group users around the net and see what you're doing. It's similar to cookies but apparently oh-so-much-more insidious. Here's the spot for you to opt out and review their updated privacy statement... http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us/pixels/details.html About half-way down the page, in the section "Outside the Yahoo! Network", you'll see a little "click here" link that will let you opt- out of their new method of snooping. I recommend you do it. -->> CAREFUL: In my opinion, the confirmation page is designed to confuse you--when you get the next screen there's a button that, if clicked, will *undo* the opt-out. Hopefully it opts out and isn't another scam. The invisable pixel in the subject line, is something Yahoo has been doing for a couple of years now. The nasty, (beacon) cookie doesn't seem to turn up on every single post that runs through yahoogroups, but when it does, it sets my email program to jumping and doing little flips, beginning with the email post it rode in on, and for anything that follows. Just deleting it doesn't always stop it's activity either. It's a good idea to have a disk cleaner or some sort of cookie eraser, to grind that sucker up, so it will stop functioning. Otherwise, the only way to go is to defrag after it's deleted. The spyware gets more insidious. Viv*
